The European Commission’s priorities:

Almost all the food we eat comes from soil: our survival depends on it, yet many of us underestimate the importance of soil. Take the quiz to find out how much naturally fertile soil there is.

The European Commission’s priorities:

The EU bioeconomy is driven by innovation and creates high-value products. The bioeconomy covers the use of renewable biological resources from agriculture, forests and seas, including residues and waste to produce food, materials and energy.

The European Commission’s priorities:

How can we measure the environmental impact of our food consumption? Can we calculate our consumer footprint and assess major steps in production? Are policies helping towards a sustainable use of resources? This StoryMap explores these questions with Life Cycle Assessment-based methods and the example of cocoa, which account for nearly half of the top EU Agri-food imports from Sub-Saharan Africa.

This StoryMap is about the eStation, a software deployed in Africa to acquire and process Earth Observation data. It presents two of its applications for fishing (in Tanzania) and farming (in the Sahel).

The European Commission’s priorities:

Fish and shellfish are traditionally used as food and feed but also innovative by-products are on the market. Overfishing is a concerning topic. In the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, 93% of stocks assessed were overfished in 2017. The Joint Research Centre analyses data on the status of fish stocks in EU waters.

This StoryMaps presents the Africa Knowledge Platform, a one-stop shop on Africa knowledge to address development challenges. The platform serves as a single entry point to a rich collection of datasets, interactive tools and deep-dives on many interconnected topics, from climate change to sustainable growth and jobs, energy, food, health and more.

The European Commission’s priorities:

Planning food crisis response can save lives if put in place in a timely manner. With two examples of recent case studies in Southern Africa, this StoryMap demonstrates the capacity of the "Anomaly HotSpot of Agricultural Production" tool to detect problems early on and advise decision makers.

The European Commission’s priorities:

The use of biofuels in transport is promoted as a means to tackle climate change, diversify energy sources, and secure energy supply. In addition, biofuels are considered as an option to contribute to the reduction of oil imports and oil dependence, rural development and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

The European Commission’s priorities:

About half of the agricultural biomass is made up of grains, fruits while the other half are residues like leaves. Cereals account for more than half of the EU economic production of this biomass and nearly 3/4 of the EU's residue production. Filling data gaps on residues could improve competitive uses and ecosystem services and leave our soils healthy.
