European Laboratory for Structural Assessment

JRC scientists research the effect of earthquakes on buildings and building materials.

Full-scale seismic experiments are carried out through an advanced test method using a ‘reaction wall’ to test how structures up to five storeys high would react during an earthquake. The ELSA reaction wall is among the largest of such facilities in the world and it is the biggest in Europe.
