Flow chemistry is used in the lab to produce solutions with very small quantities of explosives, a process that is safer and less polluting than traditional approaches. Our tests are used by airport inspectors and law enforcement officers in Europe to make sure sniffer dogs and electronic detection equipment provide the highest level of security.

In seismic-prone regions, improved fire performance may be required. There are no guidelines in European standards yet which is why we study how buildings respond to fire at our Reaction Wall in the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment in Ispra in order to improve design guidelines and standards for earthquakes-resisitant buildings.

The tests use the largest reaction wall in Europe, which is special. The initiative will help create new guidelines for the design and details of flat-slab structures that are vulnerable to seismic and gravitational loads, thereby increasing their safety. This is only one illustration of testing the effects of earthquakes on materials and constructions.
