Algae biomass for a sustainable and circular bioeconomy in Europe

Algae are a valuable resource for food supplements, cosmetics, fertilisers and fuels. The JRC is compiling and analysing data on sustainable algae production and use in Europe.

Aquaculture plants are becoming more common, despite Europe's small share of global algae production, which is largely based on wild stock cultivation. JRC is developing a more comprehensive set of algae biomass data which will allow for a more thorough analysis to ensure that algae resources in Europe are used sustainably as part of a circular economy.
