Food Contact Materials Laboratory

The Joint Research Centre's Food Contact Materials laboratory in Ispra, Italy tests a wide range of materials that come in contact with our food for safe chemical leaching.

The role of the JRC is to harmonise tests and analytical methods so that all laboratories in the EU report comparable results. We test if a plastics wrap, carton box, metal can, ceramic bowl but also kitchenware, cutlery and food processing equipment are safe to use and maintain scientific knowledge and technical competence in this field.

Find out more on food contact materials and take a virtual tour of the laboratory.
