Mining contributes significantly to African economies, but mines impose pressures on ecosystems and are associated with illicit financial flows. Extractive industries are left unmonitored over large parts of Africa because of capacity constraints or the inaccessibility of remote regions. This StoryMap is about Earth observation as a solution to monitor gold mines, increase transparency, and encourage responsible extraction.
