Most of the food we buy is packed in plastic, metal or other fabricated materials which make it easy to store and transport but how can we be sure food packaging is safe for our health?
Food packaging and kitchenware are made of lots of different materials. Should we be concerned that these materials are in contact with what we eat? Could chemical compounds of these materials migrate and be transferred into food? The European Reference Laboratory for Food Contact Materials provides scientific and technical assistance to the EU and the Member States. It organises inter-laboratory comparison exercises and conducts training courses for the benefit of National Reference Laboratories and of experts from developing countries.
The Joint Research Centre's Food Contact Materials laboratory in Ispra, Italy tests a wide range of materials that come in contact with our food for safe chemical leaching.
