E-mobility – clean and environmentally friendly transport using electric vehicles – is based on an innovative, climate friendly technology with big growth potential.

Biofuels and bioenergy: How green are they?

Biomass is the organic fraction of both agricultural products, from forestry and related industries, and industrial and municipal waste. This includes for example wood, straw, energy crops, agricultural waste, agro-industrial waste, plants and animal waste. Bioenergy is the production of energy from biomass for uses in transport, heat or electricity. Within this context, since one of the drivers for bioenergy development at worldwide level is climate change policy, an important question to be answered is: How green are biofuels and bioenergy?

VELA: Vehicle Emissions Laboratory

The Ispra, Italy-based Vehicle Emissions Laboratory (VELA) comprises a well-equipped chemical and physical analysis labs, and seven major testing facilities capable of conducting emissions tests on a variety of vehicles.

Science for disaster risk reduction and response

Science and technology offer key solutions to improve disaster risk reduction, as well as anticipation and response to natural and man-made disasters.<br/><br/>The European Commission’s in-house science service, the Joint Research Centre (JRC), carries out research in crisis management technologies, analysis and application of remotely sensed data, natural hazard modelling, information mining/analysis, vulnerability and risk analysis, and civil engineering to support resilience against disasters.

Science for nuclear safety and security

Ensuring nuclear safety and security has always been a priority for the EU. The March 2011 Council conclusions as well as the 2014 Nuclear Summit emphasise the need to give priority to the highest standards for nuclear safety and security in the EU and internationally.<br/>The JRC supports the European Commission in fulfilling the obligations set up by the Euratom (European Atomic Energy Community) Treaty and recommendations, decisions, regulations and directives in the areas of nuclear research, training and education and radiation protection.

Science for a Circular Economy

In a circular economy, resources such as energy and materials are transformed and reused in a sustainable manner. This leaflet outlines examples of JRC's scientific and technical support to EU policies related to efficient use of resources and environment protection.

Science for Agriculture

The JRC provides scientific and technical support to the European Union’s agriculture and food security policies through its monitoring, modelling and economic analysis of agricultural resources and farm systems.

Science for Health

The Joint Research Centre (JRC), as the European Commission’s in-house science service, has a longstanding experience on health-related activities. These range from the detection of potentially hazardous substances in food, to the monitoring of health threats and environmental risks, as well as standardisation of measurements and validation of methods for safety assessment. The JRC is also now successfully developing new expertise in important public health-related areas, such as cancer and rare diseases, nutrition and healthy ageing, as well as behavioural sciences applied to public health.

Scientific support for financial stability

Since the beginning of the financial crisis the European Commission has made several propositions to help tackle two pressing challenges: the need to simultaneously restore financial stability and boost economic growth. The JRC develops scientific models and methods to assist the Commission and EU member states in taking informed policy decisions in these fields. (November 2012)

Solar Energy: Capturing the benefits of photovoltaics

Photovoltaic (PV) modules convert photons from the sun’s rays into electricity, which can either be stored or fed into the electricity grid. It is a very promising technological option to shift towards a decarbonised energy supply. With its European Solar Test Installation (ESTI), the JRC assesses the performance of new and improved photovoltaic devices and performs pre-normative research. (June 2013)

Science for Energy

This report aims to give a comprehensive overview of the JRC's work in relation to the global energy challenge. It highlights the JRC's research in areas such as security of energy supply, renewable energy, energy technology innovation, energy efficiency, nuclear energy, and hydrogen technologies. For each area, a detailed description of the research carried out by the JRC is provided along with how this work provides the scientific and technical support to EU policy in the field of energy. Science for Standards: a driver for innovation

This report aims to give a comprehensive overview of the JRC's work in relation to standardisation in fields as diverse as health, environment or energy. It provides a comprehensive overview of how the JRC's scientific and technical support to EU policies in this field. JRC research includes for instance developing reference materials for environmental monitoring, ensuring international compatibility in the area of smart grids and electromobility, and improving standards in cutting edge technologies such as remote sensing and nanotechnology. Science for food

In May 2015, the JRC has released a report on its scientific support to the EU's "from farm to fork" policy which ensures Europeans enjoy safe and nutritious food, while facilitating the food industry to work under the best possible conditions. This report also presents JRC research on global food security – a growing challenge for researchers and policymakers alike when over 800 million people face hunger worldwide and food demand is expected to rise by 60% by 2050.

Science for Nuclear safety and security

This report aims to give a comprehensive overview of the JRC's work in relation to nuclear safety and security. It highlights the JRC's relevant scientific output in nuclear safety; nuclear security; reference measurements; materials and standards; nuclear knowledge management; training and education and, in the last chapter, innovation. In addition, the report lists facilities, partners and references as well as links to useful tools and websites are provided. (August 2014)
