The JRC is spread across six sites in five different countries within the EU: Brussels and Geel (Belgium), Ispra (Italy), Karlsruhe (Germany), Petten (The Netherlands), Seville (Spain). The JRC employs over 3000 people.

The JRC manages a number of Knowledge and Competence Centres in priority policy areas. The knowledge and competence centres facilitate knowledge management and promote new collaborative working methods.

The JRC is the European Commission’s science and knowledge service, carrying out research and providing independent scientific advice in support of EU policies. The JRC hosts specialist laboratories and unique research facilities and is home to thousands of scientists.

The Knowledge Centres operated by the Joint Research Centre bring together experts and knowledge from different sources inside and outside the European Commission. They help policy-makers to understand the latest scientific evidence in a transparent, tailored and concise way.
