Food fraud has high economic costs, as well as a negative impact on the reputation of honest food providers and consumer trust in genuine quality food, not to mention their health.
Most commercially exploited species are under high fishing pressure. Estimates show that, worldwide, only 7% of monitored marine fish stocks are underfished.
Fish and shellfish are traditionally used as food and feed but also innovative by-products are on the market. Overfishing is a concerning topic. In the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, 93% of stocks assessed were overfished in 2017. The Joint Research Centre analyses data on the status of fish stocks in EU waters.
