Most commercially exploited species are under high fishing pressure. Estimates show that, worldwide, only 7% of monitored marine fish stocks are underfished.
Fish and shellfish are traditionally used as food and feed but also innovative by-products are on the market. Overfishing is a concerning topic. In the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, 93% of stocks assessed were overfished in 2017. The Joint Research Centre analyses data on the status of fish stocks in EU waters.
